About this series
In A Projector Naturally Sheds Light onto a Screen, Yalda Eskandari uses a projector to cast images onto a room, creating layers of imagery. "Suppose you are an advanced apparatus. To understand your world , you constantly project yourself out onto the world , and others impose meanings on you in the process ; introjection,” states Eskandari.
For example, you've learned to view spaces like the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom as feminine. Now, imagine a projector disrupting this stereotype. This forces you to rethink your concepts and understandings.
Looking at the image of a person in bathroom: the image depicts a scene where a projected image overlays a bathroom setting. The projection features a androgynous body, partially obscured, the figure blends with the bathroom's tiles and shower curtain. The bathroom wall has a patterned tile design with pinkish hues, and various bathroom items like a shower brush, a blue comb, and a washcloth can be seen. The projection creates a surreal effect, merging the projected image with the physical space, blending reality with the projected visual, adding layers of meaning and altering the perception of the everyday environment and interpretation.
The projector can manipulate and tease these ideas. By projecting new images, it infuses fresh meanings into familiar spaces. This act is akin to a language disorder, such as aphasia, transforming the original essence of the space. Eskandari's work challenges our preconceptions and invites us to see everyday environments in a new light, demonstrating how art can alter our perception and understanding of the world.
