About this series
In Juliet Haas's project Geothermal Island, she explores the profound connection between herself, her camera, and the Icelandic landscape. Through her lens, Haas captures the sensory richness of her surroundings, from the layers of sound carried by the wind to the earthy scent of the soil underfoot.
Living in a remote farmstead in Iceland as an Artist in Residence, Haas immerses herself in the isolation and majesty of the environment. Despite the physical distance from civilization, she finds herself deeply connected to the land and its rhythms.
Geothermal Island serves as a visual narrative of Haas's experience, depicting moments of solitude and wonder amidst the rugged Icelandic terrain. Through her photographs, she conveys a sense of longing to return to this unique place, where every gust of wind and scent of mud leaves an indelible mark on the soul.
Haas's work transcends mere documentation, offering viewers a glimpse into the depth of her personal journey and artistic expression. Each image in Geothermal Island is a testament to the transformative power of photography, igniting moments of brilliance that resonate with the human spirit.
Artist statement
Juliet Haas’s visual language is fueled by the many moods expressed in an ever changing landscape. Much like poetry or a play of words theatrically presented in a wild stream of consciousness, her passion is to capture Mans’ terrible glorious mark on the Earth in a frame. To witness it with a child-like wonder and throw its essence up into the wind to see where it lands. It is in this place of un-reality where the spirit can roam freely to explore where time has no meaning and there is only beauty.
Juliet Haas started her photographic journey as an architecture student in 1993. During a mentorship program she embarked on a field exploration of a dream location for a Spa and Retreat Center she would design from the ground up including topographical maps and hand drawn drafts of the structure in pencil on velum. It would never begin. This assignment photographing the landscape and taking the film into the darkroom is where the magic of print making changed the direction of her life.
