Nathan A. Bauman’s work is infused with a sense of raw emotion and authenticity. His latest project "Homeland" is a deeply personal photographic project, documenting his first visit to the country of his ancestors. With familial ties deeply rooted in the Frosinone region of Italy, Bauman has long felt a strong pull toward Italy, a place that has shaped his identity despite having never lived there. This project reflects that journey of discovery, an attempt to capture the essence of a culture that has always been part of his life through stories, traditions, and family values.
The series comprises 20 black-and-white 35mm photographs available on Superrare that serve as a visual exploration of the people, landscapes, and cultural values that have subtly influenced Bauman for over three decades. Growing up in the United States, his understanding of Italy was largely shaped by family stories and traditions, but "Homeland" marks the first time he was able to experience it firsthand. The images span various regions, including Milano, Bolzano, Firenze, and beyond, each city offering a layer to his evolving perception of a country that, while unfamiliar, still felt like home.
Bauman's approach to "Homeland" is not just about documenting a place; it’s about understanding how Italy has existed in the background of his life. For him, these photographs are more than just moments captured on film—they represent a bridge between his past and present, rooted in a desire to uncover his heritage and understand his family's legacy.
If we zoom out, "Homeland" serves as both a starting point and a milestone for Baumans's photographic relationship with his ancestral land. It is the beginning of what he envisions as a long-term journey to visually document Italy, while also acting as a timestamp of when he began to truly connect the dots between his personal history, cultural identity, and future aspirations. For Bauman, this project isn't just about photography; it’s about identity, memory, and the profound impact that a place can have on a person’s sense of self, offering viewers not only a glimpse into the landscapes and people of Italy, but also into the deeper cultural and familial ties that bind him to his ancestors’ homeland.
